Office System 2003

Q. What is the Microsoft Office System?

A. Microsoft Office has evolved from a suite of personal productivity products to a more comprehensive and integrated system. Building on the familiar tools that many people already know, the Microsoft Office System includes programs, servers, services, and solutions designed to work together to help address a broad array of business problems.

At the core of the Microsoft Office System are the Microsoft Office 2003 Editions—such as Microsoft Office 2003 Professional Edition 2003—which deliver the core desktop productivity tools. New features in these programs enhance how employees can work with one another, partners, and customers, and how organizations capture and use information. In addition to the core desktop editions, the Microsoft Office System includes new programs, servers, and services that build on the productivity software skills your employees already possess. - MSFT

Q. Can I run Office System 2003 along with previous versions of Office?
A. Yes, with one exception. You can only run one version of Outlook on your system. During the installation, you will be prompted to keep or remove the previous Office versions.

Q. Can files created in the Microsoft Office System 2003 be opened and modified in previous versions of the Office programs?
A. Yes. There will be some requirements to save files as legacy files (such as Publisher 2003 Save As Publisher 2000).

Q. Where do I find the Office 2003 Shortcut Bar?
A. The shortcut bar (last seen in Office XP) has been removed for Office 2003. Microsoft felt that the shortcut bar was wasting space on the cd-rom and an additional support issue. They felt that using the existing Quick Launch toolbar in Windows and break away toolbars for your desktop is the same feature. You can still add the Office Shortcut Bar by using your Office XP CD (or Office 2002 application). Choose a custom installation, and choose to install the Shortcut Toolbar only.

Q. What are the added and improved features of Office 2003 vs. Office XP?
A. Visit the following link for more information:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/compare.mspx

Q. Why is there no longer a Media CD for clipart?
A. Office System 2003 and it’s applications include minimal Clipart. If you are connected to the internet, a search for clipart will give you an additional 30,000 Office 2003 only clipart items in your search results. You must be connected however.

Q. Is internet connectivity required?
A. No. Activation of your Office System 2003 can be phoned in instead of over the internet. Additionally, you can turn off all online service features by going to your Tools > Options > General Tab > Service Options. Office will no longer look to the web for help features, templates or clipart.

Q. How many computers can I install Office System 2003 on?
A. You can install Office System 2003 on 1 desktop and one laptop so long as they are not in concurrent use. If you are using the Students and Teacher Edition, you can install Office on up to 3 systems.

Q. How can I be sure that I have the latest updates and patches for my Office System 2003?
A. In any of your Office applications, go to Help > Check for Updates
